Folks that think of themselves as Republicans and Democrats are not the idiots. However, many of the men and women who represent them are complete idiots. Kids, that is why Mr. Trump managed to get himself elected as the new President of the United States.
I am by no means a mental giant when it comes to politics, but even I can see why we have a Trump for president. The Republican Party has spent the last 8 years of the Obama administration doing nothing. They did not represent you and me; instead they spent little time actually working; and on the rare occasions when they did work, the only thing they represented was their cause as obstructionists.
On the other hand, the Democrats kept moving further to the right trying to get some kind of legislation passed that would be amenable to both parties.
All the while, both parties ignored the cries from the American people. In my humble opinion, our legislators spent too much time looking at the GDP which doesn’t tell us all that much about what’s really going on with we Americans. To really understand, they didn’t have to go much further than the U.S. Census ( http://www2.census.gov/programs-surveys/cps/tables/time-series/historical-poverty-people/hstpov1.xls). Idiots!
Then there was the whole happiness thing about the decrease in joblessness. Unfortunately, not a lot of press time was spent on a few uncomfortable facts. For instance, many of the jobs were low paying or were part time. Idiots!
Had the parties really been interested in our welfare, they could have averted the election of Trump. Now the Republicans, most with a bad taste in their mouth, are sucking up to him. Don’t believe me; see whose coming to dinner with Trump these days. Ugh!
As for the Democrats, they’re wringing their hands wondering how a Trump presidency could have happened. After all, the Democrats were supposed to be the Party of the working class. Big problem Democratic Party, you seemed to forget that. The hand writing was on the wall and slapping you in the face with the popularity of Bernie Sanders. Idiots!
We Americans can only blame so much on the idiocy of our representatives. In our struggle to maintain the comfortable lifestyle of yesteryear, we have amassed huge debt. To hell with the idea of saving for luxuries like that big screen TV or the coveted I phone, we wanted it now. Instead, we just dug those little plastic cards out of our wallets and purses and bought what we wanted. Instant gratification for us and at our expense. Oh well, all that high interest we were paying put big smiles on the faces of bankers. Were we stupid or what?
Do I think Trump will be a good President? No. I think he will thrill at the notoriety. I think he will take advantage of the office to further his own businesses. And I don’t think he gives a damn about you and me. I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think I am.
The big question is what can you and I do to correct the idiot problems in government?
- We start by not spending money we don’t have on things we don’t need. We use our credit cards only to buy things we can pay off each month. If we don’t have the will power to do that, we pay cash. Here’s what will happen if we all do that. We will get richer and the banks will get a little poorer. Yippee.
- Here’s how to avoid voting idiots in office.
- If the campaign is primarily financed by big money interests, the candidate is probably going to owe a debt to big money interests. Study the bio of the candidate for clues. Look at where they came from and what they support. For instance, a Mitt Romney type person may not have the capacity to understand the problems facing middle class American, let alone the poor. An Elizabeth Warren type does.
- Be skeptical of corporate owned media. See what your local public funded television and radio stations have to say.
- If the candidate leans right, listen to what the left has to say. If he or she leans left, see what the right has to say.
- Ask the candidate questions and look for specific answers. Politicians can be a slippery lot when it comes to specifics. Put your questions in writing and post the answers to Face Book, Twitter and on your blog.
- Don’t be afraid to tell your candidate what’s bugging you. See how they respond then compare their response with previous behavior. When you do this, it will tell you a lot about that candidate. If the behavior of the candidate lines up with what he or she told you, you might just have a good representative. If not, you are probably being told what the candidate thinks you want to hear. In other word, the candidate is not just an idiot, but a lying idiot.
- Support your state in getting rid of the archaic Electoral College.
- I am not a fan of Hillary Clinton, but the fact remains over two and a half million of us voted for her in lieu of Trump. That’s a lot of votes and none of them mattered. Every vote should count. That’s what democracy is all about kids. I support the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC) as a way to fix this problem without the need for a constitutional amendment.
- If you want to know more about how the Electoral College came to exist, check out this interesting article in Time: http://time.com/4558510/electoral-college-history-slavery/
- To get involved if your state hasn’t passed legislation to eliminate the Electoral College see: http://www.nationalpopularvote.com/written-explanation. If your state isn’t on the list, start contacting your state legislators and encourage your friends and family to do the same.
- Remember that we have the power. There are more of us. Get involved if you can and at the very least VOTE.
