Now why in the world would a success oriented blogger like Mama Vic write a post about guns? Wellll, my dears, it’s not really about guns or people who own them to kill animals for food. It’s about people who own them out of fear. This post is really on why there is such a fervent fear on the part of some of my kids that they might lose their gun rights.
When my kids believe from the bottom of their hearts that they are defenseless and helpless without a gun, the right to own a gun is going to be defended almost or possibly to the death. Folks that fall into this category feel insecure and unsafe without their guns.
Next we need to discuss the fight to own the assault weapons. Why the need for assault weapons? Let’s face it; it only takes one bullet to kill a person. Why would anyone need a weapon that will kill dozens? One answer came unexpectedly from some relatives that were visiting from North Dakota last Christmas.
During the visit, the topic of gun ownership arose. I don’t remember how it came up, but these really nice people were bragging about all the guns including assault rifles that they owned.
“Why do you guys own assault rifles?” I asked.
“We think there’s going to be a revolution in this country and we plan to be ready to fight when that happens.”
“What makes you think there’s going to be a revolution,” I asked?
“The Government is corrupt and taking all our rights away. We won’t stand for it forever. There will be a time when we have to take a stand.”
“Do you think background checks would be a good idea? At least that would help keep the guns out of the hands of criminals and mentally impaired folks?”
“It would be alright if a background check was all there was to it, but that’s just a way for the Government to know who owns guns so they can take them away.”
“Oh,” I said and then changed the conversation into something more pleasant. There was no point at all in arguing. Their minds were made up.
Fear was looming in the back of the minds of these folks. When fear flies in one window, reason flies out the other. We should always look our fears squarely in the eye and see if there is good reason for them. And we should always look to ways of resolving differences without using violence.
One thing I did read that made me terribly sad was how many gun related suicides we have. Do you think tighter gun restrictions would prevent some suicides?
What do you think? Do think an armed revolution is imminent? How do you think we can resolve our problems without the use of violence? Remember to be nice to each other or you’ll end up with a Mama Vic slap.
P.S. Mama Vic owns guns. One my dad gave me when I was 13, the other I inherited when he died. Neither is an assault rifle.
