Hi kids,
I’ve studied most of the major religions and a few of the minor ones and their idea of God. Some think God is an actual being. Others think God as such doesn’t exist at all. Still others think God is a power that permeates everything.
Quite frankly, I’ve never seen God per se, but I leave my mind open to the possibility that there is one. Being somewhat scientific in my thinking, I am not among those who believe God to be some guy in the sky that smiles down on me if I’m good and smites me down if I’m bad. If that was the case, there should have been a heck of a lot of smiting happening to those kids of mine that have committed heinous acts of cruelty over the ages.
If you believe in a smiting God, I don’t hold that against you. Oh, and your constant reply that we can’t understand the workings of God when people ask you why God allows horrible things to happen, is also fine if you’re satisfied with that answer. It’s certainly one way to keep your beliefs in tact, but that answer has never worked for me.
Over the last couple of decades, I think science has come closer to answering that question than all the religions put together except maybe some aspects of Buddhism. What science has discovered is that there is a connectedness between all things both living and nonliving. My geeky science kids have also discovered that thoughts are not only measurable, but they influence the way our bodies function, how we behave and our perception of reality.
I think the question is not so much about the existence of a God, but in how you define the word. The one thing I do know is that you kids have been smiting one another for eons over your specific beliefs in God. It’s time to let your brothers and sisters alone in their beliefs even if you think they’re wrong. It’s time to be compassionate toward one another, care for one another and care for this lovely Earth on which we all live.
There’s nothing that brings me greater joy than reading or hearing about all my kids that are acting like this. They get a gold star for the good that they do and you can earn one too. Doing this is easy. Every day ask yourself one question. How can I make things better for everyone?
Sometimes that might mean the simple act of smiling at a stranger or letting a car merge into traffic. It might mean starting a business that adds great value to the lives of others. It might mean going through the things you own and donating what you don’t need to help those less fortunate than you. I know whatever you decide, it will be perfect and Mama Vic will be proud of you.
Down below in the comments section share with me the good that you do. I love my kids and love to hear from them.
